Purple Star Award

Louisville High School Receives Purple Star Award for its Support of Military Families

Louisville City Schools is proud to announce that Louisville High School has received the Purple Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education. The Purple Star designation for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a significant commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation’s armed forces.

To receive the award, schools must have a staff point of contact for military students and families who serve as the primary liaison between them and the school. Congratulations to LHS Assistant Principal, Mr. John Twinem, for his work coordinating programs and advocating for military families. Additionally, the district must have a dedicated page on its website, featuring resources for military families, which is at tinyurl.com/LCSDmilitaryfamilies.

A few examples that demonstrate Louisville’s commitment to creating a military-friendly school include:

  • Hosting a first responder and military appreciation night at a Louisville home basketball game. Those in attendance, supporting either team, were honored with a ceremony at center-court during the game's halftime.

  • Holding a military appreciation night at a recent home football game. Members of the armed forces escorted the team onto the field for the presentation of colors and singing of the National Anthem. The Ohio National Guard outfitted the team with camouflage jerseys for the game.

  • Celebrating with public signings for students committing to service in the armed forces.

  • Creating two public military displays of students who have served or are serving in the armed forces.

  • Providing checklists for military families moving into the district that includes resources, programs and counseling services available in the community.

“Louisville Schools are proud to serve our military families,” said Twinem. “We want military students and families to feel welcome. We want them to be able to get involved in their school and district as soon as possible and have the resources they need to integrate into our community successfully.”

The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services and Adjutant General, helps decide eligibility. The Purple Star emblem was selected because purple symbolizes support for military families.
